U jeku NATO bombardovanja SR Jugoslavije (1999. godine), u čijem je sastavu bila pokrajina Kosovo i Metohija, u okviru Republike Srbije, Goran Stojčetović upoznaje Danijela Savovića, umetnika iz Beograda, koji se tada nalazio na odsluženju vojne obaveze. Obojica razvijaju ideju o osnivanju radikalnog umetničkog pokreta koji bi bio inspirisan ratom i ludilom. Nakon završetka bombardovanja, Goran se sa porodicom nasilno seli s Kosova i Metohije i započinje izbeglički život na selu, u okolini Beograda. Nalazi se sa Danijelom i započinju intenzivni umetnički rad i istraživanje sopstvene psihe uz upotrebu alkohola.

 

Nakon 14 godina od njihovog prvog susreta, 2013. godine, u alkoholnom delirijumu, Goran poziva Danijela da mu se pridruži u bekstvu od porodice, u ideji da život posvete umetnosti koju će stvarati upravo na Kosovu i Metohiji. Nakon buđenja iz alkoholnog delirijuma u Kosovskoj Mitrovici, Goran doživljava viziju u kojoj su mu se ukazale rečenice: "Goran Stojčetović više ne postoji. Samo art brut, nema više bežanja". Nakon vizije, odlučuju da se vrate u Beograd. Goran odmah prestaje sa alkoholom i nakon dva meseca osniva grupu Art Brut Serbia, pozvavši umetnike Danijela Savovića, Bojana Đorđevića Omču i Danila Spasovića Denketa, da mu se pridruže. Godinu dana kasnije, 2014. osniva istoimeno udruženje.

 

Već sa prvim izložbama i intenzivnim promocijama na društvenim mrežama, udruženje dobija simpatije, podršku i pozive na saradnju od različitih pojedinaca i grupa ljudi. Novinari su naročito zaslužni za širenje vesti o udruženju shvativši ga kao potpuno novi i nezavistan umetnički pokret sa humanim načelima i slobodom ekspresije. Francuska reč "brut" se u srpskom društvu doživljava kao sinonim za nešto agresivno i destruktivno pa se naziv udruženja sa pojmom art brut i naziva države, prvenstveno shvatao kao nešto što oslikava agresiju u Srbiji ali i agresiju nad Srbijom. Takođe, mnogobrojni ljudi, novinari i saradnici nisu imali nikakvo znanje o Dibifeovom art brutu.

 

Momenat kada je šira javnost saznala za pojam art brut, desila se mesec dana nakon osnivanja udruženja kada je Goran objavio na društvenim mrežama da je Kristijana Golubovića, koji je upravo tada izašao na uslovnu slobodu sa dugogodišnje robije, proglasio počasnim članom udruženja. Ova "zvezda" kriminalnih bandi iz vremena raspada Jugoslavije, je poznat javnosti širom nekadašnje Jugoslavije. Goran je saznao da on godinama unazad crta i piše u zatvorima, u kojima je proveo više od polovine svog života. Čim je Kristijan izašao na slobodu, Goran ga je kontaktirao i proveo mnogo vremena razgovarajući s njim uz posmatranje stotine crteža iz zatvora. Ova vest je buknula čitavim regionom i otvorila podeljenost stavova u javnosti i stručnim krugovima.

 

Uporedo, Goran objavljuje javni poziv za građane koji su se likovno izražavali u toku NATO bombardovanja. Svoje i radove Danijela Savovića iz tog perioda proširuje radovima još nekoliko neakademskih umetnika i organizuje izložbe na Kosovu i Metohiji i većim gradovima Srbije. Tema bombardovanja u Srbiji, opet izaziva ambivalentna osećanja i stavove društva. Iste godine, Goran odlazi u posetu muzeju Arnulfa Rajnera i muzeju Gugging, u Austriji, nakon čega objavljuje prvi detaljan tekst u Srbiji o muzeju Gugging.

 

Početkom 2015. Goran osniva Art brut studio VMA u Dnevnoj bolnici Vojnomedicinske akademije u Beogradu. U bolnici razvija svoj princip rada nazvavši ga dubinski crtež. Radove pacijenata bolnice uključuje u izložbe i performanse udruženja.

 

Već 2016. godine, Goran kontaktira Muzej Halle Saint Pierre u Parizu i od Martine Lusardy, direktorke muzeja dobija odgovor o zainteresovanosti za saradnjom. Direktorka ubrzo dolazi sa svojim saradnicama u Srbiju na sastanak s Goranom u kojem ga obaveštava da muzej želi da napravi veliku izložbu savremene marginalne umetničke scene Balkana i da na njega gledaju kao na glavnog predstavnika srpske scene koji će im pomoći u okupljanju i pronalaženju umetnika iz bivše Jugoslavije. Prilikom jedne od poseta direktorke, došao je i John Maizels, urednik časopisa "Raw Vision" iz Londona. Nakon godinu i po dana istraživanja i komunikacije, Muzej Halle Saint Pierre je organizovao veliku izložbu "Turbulences Dans Les Balkans" koja je trajala skoro godinu dana.

 

Ova saradnja i izložba su udruženju pružile međunarodni status i poštovanje u sopstvenoj sredini. U međuvremenu, Goran dobija sve više poziva za organizovanjem radionica dubinskog crteža i prezentacija o udruženju Art Brut Serbia u zemlji i regionu. 2018. godine, Gorana kontaktira Daniela Bilopavlović Bedenik, kustoskinja Muzeja savremene umetnosti u Zagrebu, u želji da joj bude vodič kroz izložbu "5 godina ABS" u Beogradu, u okviru festivala "Novo Doba". Nakon toga, Daniela predlaže rad na organizaciji velike izložbe hrvatske i srpske savremene marginalne scene u Muzeju savremene umetnosti Zagreb, koja se desila 2020. Ovo će biti istorijski kulturni događaj i fenomen jer će to biti prva zajednička velika izložba srpskih i hrvatskih umetnika, nakon rata i raspada Jugoslavije. Ista izložba je priređena 2022. godine u Muzeju naivne i marginalne umetnosti u Jagodini.

 

Dolaskom nove direktorke Ivane Bašičević Antić na čelo MNMU, u potpunosti se menja i poboljšava domaći odnos prema vrednosti udruženja. Iste godine, Goran dobija poziv od organizacije manifestacije "Novi Sad - evropska prestonica kulture" da bude umetnički direktor programa "Art brut / Druga?Evropa". U okviru toga, Goran osmišljava program u kome će glavnu poziciju imati rezidencijalno gostovanje domaćih i stranih umetnika među kojima su bili umetnici iz austrijskog muzeja Gugging i estonskog Kondas Centra.

 

Ubrzo, nakon gostovanja na međunarodnoj tribini o art brutu u Beču, koju je organizovala Amalija Stojsavljević, srpska istoričarka umetnosti sa prebivalištem u Beču, dolazi do dogovora o njenom ulasku u udruženje na funkciju potpredsednice i direktorke programa. Njenom inicijativom radi se na sređivanju arhive, kolekcije i izradi sajta udruženja. Takođe, Amalija je učestvovala na 1. međunarodnom susretu Art Brut/ Outsider Art u Meksiko Sitiju 2023. u organizaciji Colegio de San Ildefonso gde je govorila o Art Brutu na Balkanu i razlikama u odnosu na Zapadnu Evropu.

 

Veoma važna aktivnost udruženja jeste kreiranje, očuvanje i izlaganje svoje umetničke kolekcije. Dugogodišnje saradnje i poverenje u ciljeve i misiju Art Brut Serbia uticali su na to da veliki broj umetnika i stvaralaca poklanja svoje radove našem udruženju. Na taj način je stvorena kolekcija od oko 2000 radova domaćih i inostranih umetnika. Sama kolekcija se sastoji od: a) radovi bivših i sadašnjih članova udruženja Art Brut Serbia, b) umetnički radovi inostranih umetnika- Samaneh Atef (Iran/ Francuska), Simon Petković (Hrvatska/Australija), Peter Kapeller (Austrija/Museum Gugging), Tambet Tamm (Estonija/Kondas Centre), Darko Brajković (Hrvatska), Hubert Duprilot (Francuska), Adam Nidzgorski (Francuska), c) crteži ljudi iz Art brut studija VMA, odnosno pacijenta Dnevne bolnice i Kluba lečenih psihoza Klinike za psihijatriju Vojnomedicinske akademije, d) crteži građana sa radionica Dubinskog crteža iz zemlje i inostranstva, e) otkupljene slike pacijenata Specijalne bolnice Centralnog zatvora u Beogradu, f) crteži dece i mladih osoba ometenih u razvoju, g) crteži umetnika i civila nastalih u vreme NATO bombardovanja SRJ, h) crteži štićenika Kazneno-popravnog zavoda za maloletnike iz Beograda, i) slike štićenika Kazneno-poravne ustanove Gevgelija, Severna Makedonija, j) crtež albanskih članova ljubitelja umetnosti MURALFEST-a KOSOVA, Uroševac (Kosovo i Metohija).

Prvih deset godina postojanja udruženja obeležile su aktivnosti vezane za stvaranje ambijenta u kojem bi Art Brut mogao biti vidljiv, okupljanje umetnika oko zajedničke ideje i regionalna saradnja, dok će u narednom periodu fokus biti na međunarodnim saradnjama i daljem brendiranju udruženja. Iako su sami počeci možda izgledali kao kratkoročni kulturni eksces, vremenom je postalo jasno da je pozicija Art Bruta zapravo pozicija trojanskog konja, koji će napasti sistem iznutra i tako umetnosti dati svežinu i život. Negujući ove vrednosti, udruženje Art Brut Srbija je jedinstvena pojava kako kod nas tako i na Balkanu.

In the middle of the NATO bombing of FR Yugoslavia (1999), which included the province of Kosovo and Metohija, within the Republic of Serbia, Goran Stojčetović met Danijel Savović, an artist from Belgrade, who was serving his military service at the time. Both develop the idea of founding a radical art movement that would be inspired by war and madness. After the end of the bombing, Goran and his family forcibly moved from Kosovo and Metohija and began a refugee life in the countryside, in the vicinity of Belgrade. He meets again with Daniel, and they begin intense artistic work and research into their own psyche with the use of alcohol.

 

In 2013, fourteen years after their first meeting, in an alcoholic delirium, Goran invites Danijel to join him in escaping from his family, with the idea of devoting their lives to the art that they will create in Kosovo and Metohija. After waking up from delirium in Kosovska Mitrovica (a city in the north of Kosovo), Goran experienced a vision in which the sentences appeared to him: "Goran Stojčetović no longer exists. Only Art Brut, there is no more escape". This experience encouraged them to return to Belgrade. Goran immediately stopped drinking alcohol and after two months founded the group Art Brut Serbia with artists Danijel Savović, Bojan Đorđević- Omča and Danilo Spasović- Denke to join him. A year later, in 2014, he officially founded the association of the same name.

 

Already with the first exhibitions and intensive promotions on social networks, the association receives sympathy, support, and invitations for cooperation from various individuals and groups. Journalists are particularly responsible for spreading the news about the association, understanding it as a completely new and independent artistic movement with humane principles and freedom of expression. The French word "brut" is seen in Serbian society as a synonym for something aggressive and destructive, so the name of the association with the term Art Brut and the name of the country was primarily understood as something that depicts aggression in Serbia, but also aggression against Serbia. Also, many people, journalists and collaborators had no knowledge about Jean Dubuffet´s art brut.

 

The wider Serbian public learned about the term Art Brut a month after the foundation of the association, when Goran announced on social networks that Kristijan Golubović (who had just then been released on parole from a long-term prison term), was declared an honorary member of the association. This "star" of criminal gangs from the time of the breakup of Yugoslavia is known to the public throughout the former Yugoslavia. Goran found out that years ago he was drawing and writing in prisons, where he spent more than half of his life. As soon as Kristijan was released, Goran contacted him and spent a lot of time talking with him while looking at hundreds of drawings from prison. This news broke out in the entire region and opened a division of opinion in the public and professional circles.

 

At the same time, Goran publishes an invitation for citizens who expressed themselves artistically during the NATO bombing. He expands his and Danijel Savović's works from that period with the works of several other non-academic artists and organizes exhibitions in Kosovo and Metohija and larger cities in Serbia. The subject of the bombing in Serbia again evokes ambivalent feelings and attitudes of society. In the same year, Goran visited the Arnulf Rainer Museum and the Gugging Museum in Austria, after which he published the first detailed text in Serbia about the Gugging Museum.

 

At the beginning of 2015, Goran founded the Art Brut Studio VMA in the Day Hospital of the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade. In the hospital, he develops his working principle, calling it Depth drawing. The works of the hospital's patients are included in the association's exhibitions and performances.

 

Already in 2016, Goran contacted the Halle Saint Pierre Museum in Paris and received a response from Martine Lusardy, the director of the museum, that she was interested in cooperation. She soon comes with her colleagues to Serbia for a meeting with Goran, in which she informs him that the museum wants to make a large exhibition of the contemporary marginal art scene of the Balkans and that they see him as the main representative of the Serbian scene who will help them gather and find artists from the former Yugoslavia. During one of the director's visits, John Maizels, editor of the magazine "Raw Vision" from London, also came. After a year and a half of research and communication, the Halle Saint Pierre Museum organized a major exhibition "Turbulences Dans Les Balkans" that lasted almost a year.

 

This cooperation and exhibition gave the association international status and respect in its own environment. In the meantime, Goran receives more and more invitations to organize Depth drawing workshops and presentations about the Art Brut Serbia association in the country and the region. In 2018, he was contacted by Daniela Bilopavlović Bedenik, the head of the Outsider Art collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, wanting to be her guide through the exhibition "5 years of ABS" in Belgrade, as part of the "Novo Doba" festival. After that, Daniela proposes to work on the organization of a large exhibition of the Croatian and Serbian contemporary marginal scene in the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb, which took place in 2020. This will be a historic cultural event and phenomenon because it will be the first joint large exhibition of Serbian and Croatian artists, after the war and the disintegration of Yugoslavia. The same exhibition was organized in 2022 at the Museum of Naive and Marginal Art in Jagodina.

 

With the assumption of the position of the new director Ivana Bašičević Antić at the head of Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art in Belgrade/Jagodina, the domestic attitude towards the value of the association is completely changing and improving. In the same year, Goran received an invitation from the organization of the event "Novi Sad - European Capital of Culture" to be the artistic director of the "Art brut / Other? Europe" program. Within this, he designed a program in which the key activity will be the residency of local and foreign artists, among whom were artists from the Austrian Gugging Museum and the Estonian Kondas Center.

 

Shortly after Goran's guest appearance at the international discussion on Art Brut in Vienna organized by Amalija Stojsavljević, a Serbian art historian and curator living in Vienna, their collaboration and Amalija's assumption of the position of vice president and director of the program came about. On her initiative, the systematization of the archive, collection and creation of the association's website began. Also, Amalija participated in the 1st International Encounter Art Brut/ Outsider Art in Mexico City 2023 organized by the Colegio de San Ildefonso where she spoke about Art Brut in the Balkans and the differences compared to Western Europe.

We would also mention a very important activity of the association is the creation, preservation, and exhibition of its own art collection. Long-term cooperation and trust in the goals and mission of Art Brut Serbia have influenced the fact that many artists and creators donate their works to our association. In this way, a collection of about 2000 works by domestic and foreign artists was created. The collection itself consists of: a) works by former and current members of the association Art Brut Serbia, b) artworks by foreign artists - Samaneh Atef (Iran/France), Simon Petković (Croatia/Australia), Peter Kapeller (Austria/Museum Gugging), Tambet Tamm (Estonia/Kondas Centre), Darko Brajković (Croatia), Hubert Duprilot (France), Adam Nidzgorski (France), c) drawings by people from the Art Brut Studio of the VMA, i.e. patients of the Day Hospital and the Treated Psychosis Club of the Psychiatry Clinic of the Military Medical Academy, d) drawings of citizens from Depth drawing workshops from the country and abroad, e) purchased pictures of patients of the Special Hospital of the Central Prison in Belgrade, f) drawings of children and young people with developmental disabilities, g) drawings of artists and civilians created during the NATO bombing of the former Yugoslavia, h) drawings of inmates of the Penitentiary for minors from Belgrade, i) pictures of inmates of the Correctional Institution Gevgelija, North Macedonia, j) drawings of Albanian members of art lovers of Muralfest Kosova, Uroševac (Kosovo and Metohija).

 

The first ten years of the association's existence were marked by activities related to the creation of an environment in which Art Brut could be visible, the gathering of artists around a common idea, and regional cooperation, while in the following period the focus will be on international cooperation and further establishment and branding of the association. Although the very beginnings may have seemed like a short-term cultural excess, over time, it became clear that the position of Art Brut is actually the position of the Trojan horse, which will attack the system from the inside and thus provide art with freshness and life. Nurturing these values, the association Art Brut Serbia is a unique phenomenon both in our country and in the Balkans.
